The historical walking tour 'Bombardment Bezuidenhout '45' is an initiative of 3 March '45 Foundation and neighbourhood residents. Together they are the choice for thirteen special locations in the district. Locations that each tell a particular piece of the history of the Bezuidenhout district. The connection of these locations creates a beautiful walk of over 5 km through the neighbourhood.

Turning point in the history of The Hague District Bezuidenhout was the unintentional Allied bombardment of 3 March 1945 on Bezuidenhout. Photographs of the situation before and immediately after the bombardment not only show the former grandeur of the district but also the terror of war. This contrast has been the starting point for putting together the information. The tour offers an historical view and let you discover the architectual buildings of recent date with its contemporary character. It is this combination which makes Bezuidenhout a special district.

For the design of the walking route and its website various parties have worked closely together and used the extensive information already available about Bezuidenhout and more specifically the war period and the bombardment on Bezuidenhout. Without these parties and available information the historic walking tour could not have been made.

Municipality The Hague

Municipality The Hague

From the first moment we have had generous support from the municipality of The Hague. They realized the outdoor information signs and its thorough integration in the streets of Bezuidenhout.

The Hague Municipal Archives

The Hague Municipal Archives

The Hague municipal archives offered a lot of support in running the texts on historical correctness and making available the many photographs on the outdoor signs and the website. It is through these images, the evolution of the neighbourhood comes to life.

Fonds 1818

Fonds 1818

Fund 1818 has the resources made available to develop this website. The website is an indispensable part in offering the large amount of information that is available about the Bezuidenhout. The website also gives us the ability to further enliven the route by video images, sound clips and additional pictures.

Volunteers

Volunteers

The route is set up by volunteers, many of them (former) inhabitants of Bezuidenhout. Without exception they were eager to contribute. This has come in the form of oral reports, third-party articles, self written articles and references to sources with relevant material about the district.

Staatsbosbeheer

Staatsbosbeheer

The route leads through the Haagse Bos, a unique forest in the middle of the city. The forest is owned by the Forestry Commission (Staatsbosbeheer). She has contributed to the provision of information about the Haagse Bos itself and more specifically about the great influence that the second world war has had on the forest. The Forestry Commission has authorized the placement of two signs in the forest.

Lyceum Zandvliet

Lyceum Zandvliet

The Christelijk Lyceum Zandvliet is a school for havo, atheneum and gymnasium located in The Hague Bezuidenhout. The school is entrepreneurial and creative. We have seen that up close. School students have written interesting texts for the Kids zone (in Dutch) and have supported the disclosure of the walking route in the district and the official opening of the hiking route on 13 February 2015.

StudioZipper

StudioZipper

StudioZipper has been involved from the very beginning in the graphical development of the walking route. It made the basic design of the signs and the website. The signs were finally elaborated by the municipality of The Hague. StudioZipper is also the creative mastermind behind the boomerang card, the poster and the walking map that were specifically developed for promotion of the route. The owner of StudioZipper is also living in Bezuidenhout.

Branding & more

Branding & more

Branding & More has built the website in association with Pixel&Code. In the design process it was very actively involved with the design of the website aimed at the two target groups we wanted to approach with the walking route, adults and children. Also, at-a-glance information supply and accessibility of the website by different kind of electronic devices was an important starting point for the technical design.

The management and development of the website is done by Branding & More.
